Best Game
April 9, 1990 - Montreal Expos at St. Louis Cardinals.
Trying to pick the best game for a player who saw action in over thirteen hundred major league games
is not an easy feat. This particular game was DeShields' first in the majors and set the tone for the
many seasons to come. DeShields started his career by going four for six with two runs, a run batted in,
a double, and a stolen base with four putouts and eight assists in the field. He was the pivot on four
double plays and started a fifth. Unfortunately for DeShields, his teammates could not muster enough
assistance. The rest of the team equalled DeShields' hit total for the game as the Expos fell in eleven
innings, 6-5. The four hits not only was DeShields career high, a number he matched thirteen other times
in his career, it also set a National League record for most hits in a debut game.
