bats in 1900.
Best Game
April 28, 1899 - New York Giants at Washington Senators.
The Washington Senators historically have been a bad team and the 1899 season was no exception. The
team finished 11th out of 12 teams in the National League, winning a mere 54 games. This game
against the Giants was one of those victories. Pete Cassidy, recently acquired from the Brooklyn
Superbas, batted third and played shortstop for the Senators. Cassidy gave the Senators the early
lead when he doubled in Win Mercer. He singled and scored in the third and then lined a grand slam
to the rightfield corner in the fourth inning. After being retired in the fifth inning, Cassidy
walked in the seventh but was caught stealing. In the field at short, Cassidy handled nine chances
flawlessly. Cassidy played the next day at shortstop then shifted to third. A week later he was the
starting first baseman for the Senators where he played until his sale to Providence in June.
